  • Bell Time Change Proposal for 2020-2021
As part of the Board Policy around Bell Time Change requests, we are seeking feedback about changing our bell times.  We would like to propose to the board that we have two 40 minute lunches, instead of one 50 minute lunch, and one 40 minute lunch.  Any feedback is taken into consideration before making the request to the board and the transportation department.  Our request would be that the 10 minutes come off the end of the day, looking for a 3:35 pm dismissal.  This would be dependent on the transportation department and the availability of bus drivers at that time.

In consultation with Parent Council, we already have the following feedback:
    • Typically, 20 minutes is enough time for students to start a game, but not enough time to get frustrated or get into arguments.  We are finding that students are getting into conflict at the end of the first break more than at the end of the shorter second break
    • 25 minutes is often too long for many students to eat in the classrooms, therefore students are out of their seats and getting in trouble, as they have nothing to do
    • With teachers capped at 80 minutes of supervision per week, by eliminating 10 minutes each day on 12 duties, we are saving 600 minutes per week, which is an equivalent of 7.5 extra bodies available for supervision throughout the week
    • If we are able to take 10 minutes off the end of the day, then it is easier for parents to get to extracurriculars, and we hope to see less disruption of classes with parents picking up children just prior to the end of the day
    • It is hard for students to go home for lunch and get back on time in 40 minutes (Our intermediate students sign out, and 2-5 go home daily). If no students go home for lunch, it means that students won’t come back late for class or get into issues in the community
    • Extra-curricular activities at lunchtime will be 5 minutes shorter or moved to before/after school
    • All new schools are built with a 40-40 break schedule
    • 60% of the school board has transitioned to 40-40 as of June 2018
    • 65% of Burlington schools have already transitioned to 40-40 as of June 2018
Should you have additional feedback that is not covered above, please send an email to and we will include it in the report.
